Practicing yoga on water can seem a little intimidating. After all, many of us find plenty of challenge balancing on land! But before you write off standup paddleboard (SUP) yoga as impossible, here’s what I tell all first-timers: “If you can breathe, you can do yoga. If you can stand on one foot, you can paddle.” Get your feet wet with these SUP poses.
The sport combines hatha yoga and vinyasa yoga asanas, or poses, with surfing. Practitioners may practice on the beach sand or in a swimming pool to gain the strength and flexibility (anatomy) required to maintain the balance and postures on fluid water such as the ocean or a lake. Practitioners can begin by moving through a sequence of yoga postures, or asana, while standing on SUP board.
Connecting with nature. No studio, no air-conditioning, no yoga mats, and best of all, no crowd. Floating on the water, beach, sun, sand, lake, forest – wherever you are, it’s bliss. Silence. Freedom.
